Effective infertility solutions are available for both men and women. Although women are more likely associated with infertility, men also comprise the same percentage in infertility cases. There are a lot of causes of infertility. For females causes such as PCOS, endometriosis, blockage of fallopian tubes, non ovulation and undetermined causes are factors that affect fertility. These cases can be treated with medicine or pills, hormonal shots, surgery, and assisted reproductive technology.
When a woman has problems in ovulating, she is usually prescribed with medicine clomiphene (Clomid, Milophene or Serophene) which is taken as a pill. This will help stimulate the release of eggs from the ovaries which improves the probability of pregnancy.
This is the first recommendation usually given by the doctor because it is proven to be effective and safe. If the problem lies on having polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), she will be given drugs like metformin and clomiphene. IF it does not work she will be given hormonal shots. These drugs would increase the chances of having multiple births.
Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes would cause infertility because the egg will not be fertilized by the sperm because of the blockage. A tubal surgery can be conducted if the damage or blockage is slight. The success rate of pregnancies is about 20-60% after the surgery. For severe blockage or damage, it is advised to have IVF and skip the tubal surgery especially for women aged 34 and above.
Inseminations are usually done if the cause of infertility is unexplained or undetermined. Insemination will require putting the sperm directly in the woman’s uterus to further increase the odds of pregnancy. IVF (in vitro fertilization) is also done if inseminations will fail. IVF is an assisted reproductive technology.
This treatment is expensive, that is why couples who have fertility problems often opt for adoption instead. IVF is a procedure in which the egg and the sperm is mixed in the lab and undergo fertilization. Fertilized eggs are placed in a woman’s uterus to grow like that of a normal pregnancy.
