Dissecting male infertility causes

Conceiving a child could be the happiest moment of a couples’ life. Many would have no problems in conceiving but there are also those who are experiencing difficulties in getting pregnant. The incapacity to conceive after attempting for a year without the use of any contraceptives is called infertility. There are about 15 percent of couples who are infertile and the numbers are rising for the past twenty years.

Infertility can be caused by a number of reasons. Some of the reasons can be because of the woman’s irregular menstrual cycle or polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), due to infections and trauma or untimely sexual intercourse. But there are about one third of the infertility cases which are attributed to male infertility.

Male infertility causes can be because of unhealthy lifestyle and other factors. Varicocele is the most common of male infertility causes. Varicocele is a condition in which the veins of the scrotum are enlarged on both or either sides. Sperm production is affected because it causes heat inside the scrotum. This will block the reproductive system which can cause infertility among males.

Some other male infertility causes are associated with taking some medicines such as imetidine and phenytoin, low sperm count because of either smoking or/and drinking alcohol or having other vices. Physical and emotional stress can also cause low sperm count. Low sperm quality, motility and bad morphology can also be some of the male infertility causes. This means the sperm does not move right and the sperm has an abnormal shape. Another male infertility causes is undescended testicle in which the testes is unable to drop into the scrotum.

Another male infertility causes can be pointed to having medical problems. These diseases can cause infertility. Among of these are liver disease, kidney disorders, sickle cell anemia, contagious and infectious diseases like mumps, reproductive organ infections like epididymitis and prostatitis and genital infections like genital herpes and gonorrhoea.

When the cause of male infertility cannot be pinpointed, a genetic problem may be present. Genetic disorders such as the condition in which there is an inability to produce sperm like of a Down Syndrome, Hypogonadism in which the normal development of the testes is impaired. Hypothyroidism and diabetic neuropathyin (which there is a nerve damage that causes troubles in ejaculation and erection) can also cause male infertility.

It is advisable to see a doctor for a check-up soon if you have already tried to have a child for about a year or more. It is very important to have yourself checked to treat the cause of infertility or any underlying medical problems that goes with it.
