Infertility Insurance

When a couple finds out that they are infertile, there are several options still available to them to fulfill their dreams of holding a precious newborn baby in their arms. Very often the only thing that stands in their way of becoming parents is money.

There are several different fertility treatments available to couples but the costs are very expensive. In-vitro fertilization is a very effective option but just one in-vitro treatment can run into the tens of thousands of dollars. Most likely it will take more then one treatment to become pregnant. Also some fertility medications can cost around $1,000 a month and some assisted reproductive technology procedures cost over $4,000.

Many couples can not afford to finance fertility treatments on their own. Luckily there is supplemental infertility insurance for couples that will give them the treatments they need without going bankrupt. It usually is very affordable and you can usually get it from your existing insurance company although each policy is very different so the couple really needs to look around before they buy into one.

For a monthly premium, insurance providers will supply you with a plan that will cover a range of fertility treatments. These treatments usually include diagnostic fertility tests, artificial insemination, and other types of assisted reproductive technology. They may also cover diagnostic test procedures, including laparoscopic surgery.

Normally, infertility insurance plans cover the most inexpensive treatment that will most likely work for the couple. They most likely will also only cover treatments for a certain number of cycles, usually between three and five. But, the use of donor eggs and donor sperm is not normally covered by infertility insurance.
There are three different types of infertility insurance.

First there is standard health insurance. This type of insurance requires that you pay a monthly premium in exchange for specific fertility coverage. There are also refund programs. Refund programs require you to pay upfront for your fertility treatments. If the couple does not have a baby then between 70% and 100% of the money is paid back to them. The other type of infertility insurance is financing. The couple can take out a loan to cover the infertility procedures. If they do not have a baby, these loans do not need to be paid back in full.

Unfortunately, not every couple is able to get infertility insurance. It varies from insurer to insurer but there are certain qualifications that you have to meet before being approved for infertility insurance. These qualifications usually require the couple to already hold an existing insurance policy. They may also have to be under the age of forty. They may also have to be struggling with infertility problems for one to five years. The couple then must hold on to the policy usually for a year before they can use it.

Although there are a lot of variables for the couple to look into and there are certain requirements that need to be met, overall getting infertility insurance for a couple who has been dealing with infertility is a wonderful idea. After the treatments are successful, the couple is going to need money in order to provide for their new born. With infertility insurance, couples are able to become pregnant without breaking the bank.

PCOS and Infertility

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is one of the main reasons for infertility problems in women.  It is believed that due to excessive insulin production in some women their bodies respond by producing high levels of male hormones or androgens.  Women with PCOC are insulin resistant which leads to diabetes.

During a women’s normal menstrual cycle, several follicles develop within the ovaries.  Each follicle contains an egg.  As the menstrual cycle continues, only one follicle will remain which will produce the egg during ovulation.  After the egg has matured, LH levels will surge causing the egg to burst from the follicle thus causing ovulation.  Because women with PCOS do not normally produce enough female hormones necessary for ovulation, these follicles do not mature to become eggs.  Some follicles may develop into cysts.

PCOS may show up on an ultra sound as a “string of pearls” within the ovary.  This “string of pearls” are the follicles that have not developed.  The ovaries will typically have several small cysts covering the outside.  Because ovulation does not occur, progesterone is not produced which is what causes the lining of the uterus to thicken.

Some symptoms of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome include the absence or an irregular period.  As a woman gets older, PCOS can become worse.  Some women may ovulate irregularly as well as not at all.  Five to ten percent of women of childbearing age have PCOS.  Most women are unaware that they have it.  In fact, less the twenty-five percent of women with PCOS have been diagnosed.

Some women are lucky enough to conceive during an irregular ovulation cycle.  Other symptoms include increased hair growth on back, chest or face, thinning hair, obesity, high insulin levels or type two diabetes, acne or pelvic pain.  Symptoms for PCOS vary with each woman.  Some women only have an irregular period as a symptom.

Obviously PCOS affects a woman’s ability to conceive because of a lack of ovulation.  But, there are several steps that can be taken to correct the problem.  Some women can simply treat their PCOS by losing weight.  Weight loss can sometimes help to improve hormone imbalances.

Metformin is a drug that improves the body’s ability to absorb insulin.  It is considered safe to use on women who do not have diabetes because it affects insulin levels and does not actually lower blood sugar directly.  Clomid or other fertility drugs are often used in the treatment of infertility relating to PCOS.

Clomid blocks estrogen receptors in the brain.  With these receptors blocked, the brain thinks there are low estrogen levels.  Low estrogen levels trigger the body to produce more FSH and LH which signal the body to ovulate.  Even though Clomid is often successful at bringing about ovulation, only thirty to forty percent of the women who do ovulate from Clomid will actually become pregnant.

In vitro Maturation (IVM) or in vitro fertilization (IVF) is also options for women with PCOS.  In vitro maturation is a procedure where immature eggs are harvested early in a woman’s cycle.  The eggs are then matured in a laboratory and afterwards can be used for fertilization. In vitro fertilization harvests the eggs after they are already mature.   The eggs are then fertilized and implanted in the woman’s uterus.

IVF treatments also include medications that help the eggs develop.  IVM is helpful for women who do not respond to drug therapy.

Infertility Statistics

Couples who are going through infertility problems often feel alone in their struggle.  They see other people with their babies and wonder why it’s not them.  They forget that there are other people in the world that are going through the same things they are going through.

There are about 7.3 million women in this country alone between the ages of 15 and 44 who have an impaired ability to have children.  Many of these women don’t even know that they have a problem until they try to start a family

Some women have gotten pregnant with issues like polycystic ovarian syndrome and the diagnosis didn’t come until after they had kids.  But, most often this is not the case.  There are many other couples who have gone through fertility treatments.  Often when seeing the happy couples with their babies, infertile couples do not contemplate whether that parent had to receive some sort of infertility treatment in order to conceive.

In 2002 11.9% or 7.3 million women between the ages of 15 and 44 years of age have received some sort of infertility services.  6.1% have received professional advice.  5.5% of women have received some sort of medical help to prevent a miscarriage.  4.8% have undergone a fertility test.  3.8% of women have received ovulation drugs.  And 1.1% of women have received artificial insemination.  11.8% of women between the ages of 15 and 44 years of age have impaired fecundity which means they not only have problems getting pregnant, they have problems carrying a baby to term.

It is commonly known that as women age their ability to become pregnant decreases with the loss of their eggs.  In fact, the percent of childless women who have ever received any infertility service between the ages of 35 and 39 years of age is 15.2%.  Childless women who have received any infertility service between the ages of 30 and 34 years of ages was 17.3% and women between the ages of 15 and 29 was only 2.9%.

The percent of married childless women between the ages of 15 and 44 years of age are infertile by these ages.  27.4% of women are infertile by the ages of 40 and 44.  22.6% of women are infertile by 35 and 39 years of age.  16.9% of women are infertile by the ages of 30 and 34. And 11% of married women are infertile by the ages of 15 and 29.

But just because there are problems getting or maintaining a pregnancy, that does not mean that it is impossible.  At age 31, the percentage of live births after undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) which is a very affective fertility treatment was about 38%.  By age 39, the percentage of live births was around 22%.   But after age 43, the percentage of live births drops to less than 10%.  Women have also used an egg donor.

Even though IVF success was less than 10% at age 40 using the mother’s own eggs, women who used an egg donor from a much younger women had a success rate of about 45%.  It is an even better rate than women using their own eggs in their early 30s.

Signs of Infertility

Many women deal with some sort of infertility.  Many women show symptoms of infertility and other women do not know there is a problem until they start trying to conceive.  With the many different types of infertility, the signs and symptoms range from women to women or can even affect the man in the relationship.

A woman should see their doctor if they have not become pregnant even though they are trying.  “Trying” means one to two years of unprotected intercourse on an average of three times a week.  The couple should see first their primary care physician or their regular OBGYN in order to diagnose a fertility problem.  They may then be referred to a specialist. Among the many possible signs of infertility, the most common for women is an irregular menstrual cycle.

Although an irregular menstrual cycle may be one of the signs of infertility, it could also point to a lot of things and does not necessarily mean that the woman is infertile.  Another sign of infertility can be a weight problem in regards to a women being to thin or obese.  Some women who are too thin and bordering on emaciation can have a problem conceiving because they lack the proper nutrients.

On the other hand, women who are obese sometimes suffer from hormonal problems, which in turn may affect their reproductive system.  Substance and alcohol abuse can also lead to infertility.  Although these are causes of infertility rather then signs of infertility because they can make a woman unable to conceive.  Women who frequently use illegal drugs and other substances can harm their bodies affecting the way it works.  They are likely candidates of being unable to produce children because substances and alcohol abuse can and may discourage the proper growth and conception of fetuses.

Signs of infertility can also be apparent in the man.  Anatomic or physical problems may be signs of infertility in men. Undescended testicles can be a factor of infertility.  Sometimes a sign of infertility in men is due to an outside cause.  Men who wear tight underwear or jeans may have an inability to produce viable sperm for conception.  Exposure to heat on their scrotum and gonads can also lead to an inability to produce children.

Some of the signs of infertility in women and men are the same.  Both men and women can have an inability to produce offspring through weight problems like obesity or due to substance abuse.  In the same way a women’s body can malfunction in a way that may not hold a pregnancy, a man might be affected because they may not be able to produce the right amount or form of sperm to conceive.

If a couple has been trying to get pregnant with no results, rather then jumping to the conclusion of infertility, the couple should take steps to make sure they are having intercourse when the woman is ovulating.  The woman can track her basal body temperature or use an ovulation kit to see when she is ovulating.  Often times, the couple is just not having intercourse around the right time of the month.

Herbal Remedies for Fertility

If you and your partner are have difficulty conceiving, you will be looking and may be considering possible fertility treatments.  There are a lot of fertility treatments which includes in vitro fertilization and artificial inseminations but these treatments are highly expensive.  Aside from the cost, these treatments are also associated with physical as well as emotional side effects.  For this reason, many are turning to alternative medicine such as herbal remedies.  Herbal remedies can work for both male and female infertility and help increase your chances for conception considerably.

Herbal remedies include the use of plants and plant extracts.  Herbal remedies are obtained from a wide variety of natural resources including plant leaves, bark, berries, flowers, and roots. They have long been used to address problems with fertility.  Herbal remedies work by increasing sex drive as well as having a positive effect on the reproductive organs as well as your hormones.  Herbal remedies can address different problems related to reproduction such as hormonal imbalance, irregular menstruation, erectile dysfunction, and sperm motility problems.

There are a lot of herbal remedies taken for fertility issues.  For women to increase fertility levels, common herbs that can be taken include red clover, raspberry leaves, lady’s mantle, false unicorn root, and stinging nettle.  Red clover is one of the most popular fertility remedies. It is high in vitamins, calcium, and magnesium which helps in nourishing the uterus and relax the nervous system, enabling conception. Red clover can be consumed by making it a tea.  Taking it daily could help you with your fertility issues. Raspberry leaf is high in calcium and also works to restore hormonal balance.  It is excellent when taken alongside red clover.  The lady’s mantle is a herb that assists in building up the uterine lining.  It also helps in regulating menstruation.  The lady’s mantle can be drunk as a tincture once daily.  False unicorn root not only restores hormonal balance in women, but it also helps to stimulate the ovaries and encourage ovulation.  The stinging nettle on the other hand, contains high levels of chlorophyll and minerals.  It helps to regulate hormones and it also aids in ovulation and menstruation.

There are also a few herbal remedies that are designed to target male fertility issues. Popular remedies include astralagus and panax ginseng (Chinese ginseng or Korean ginseng) Astralagus is thought to improve conception rates by improving sperm motility as well as concentration while panax ginseng is a popular infertility remedy that is believed to increase firmness and length of an erection.  It is also believed to increase testosterone levels, sperm count, and sperm motility.

However, herbal remedies should also be taken with caution as it can cause a number of changes in the body especially when taken with other herbs, prescription medications as well as over-the-counter medications. Natural herbal remedies have been known to cause serious side effects including heart attacks, strokes, and seizures.  This is the reason why before starting to take these herbal remedies, you should consult your doctor.  Additionally, you should follow the instructions and report to the doctor any side effects immediately once you experienced them.

Boosting Fertility With a Diet

If you are having problems on getting pregnant, maybe the answer could be found in your kitchen.  There are certain foods which you will want to include in your diet if you are working yourself to be fertile and have that pregnancy.

A woman who wants to be a mom should be eating high-fat dairy products. According to studies, a woman who includes at least a serving of high fat dairy in their diet each day reduces their chances of suffering from infertility related issues by 25%.  It is said that the dairy food increases the function as well as health of your ovaries.

Fatty acid-rich foods should also be added in that diet.  Fatty acids help in making your ovary healthy and functioning and many women have diets lacking fatty acids.  Foods that are rich in fatty acids include nuts as well as fishes.

As always, fruits and vegetables should be included in a diet of a woman wanting to be pregnant, particularly fruits and vegetables that are rich in beta carotene.  Vitamin A helps produce hormones needed to ovulate.  Foods such as peaches and carrots help make sure that you have enough vitamin A in your body.

A woman-to-be-mom must also have enough protein each day.  She must make sure that she gets 45 g of protein each day.  Protein-rich foods include fish, nuts, as well as milk and dairy products.  Eating plenty of low fat protein is important for egg production that is why if it is possible, stay away from red meat. Although protein is good, more than 45 g can keep the embryo from implanting that is why you should also take into consideration that you just take enough protein.

To have enough cervical mucus to carry the sperm to the egg, make sure you get plenty of water. In addition, water is crucial for keeping your egg follicles and womb healthy and fertility friendly.

If you want to be pregnant, you should also be eating foods high in folate.  Green leafy foods are rich in folate.  Folate decreases the chance of your baby having neural tube defects such as spina bifida.  Your partner should also be consuming enough folate as folate increases sperm health.

Your partner should also be eating foods high in zinc.  He should eat plenty of beans, seeds, nuts, eggs and oysters.  Zinc is responsible for making the outside tail of the sperm.

Doctors believe that diet is one of the main contributors and causes for infertility that is why having a fertility diet increases your chance of having that conception.

Getting Pregnant After Age 35

The trend today with regards to having a baby is when you are 30.  The rate of women trying to conceive during their 30’s going to 40’s is increasing.  Other people suggest that our “30’s is the new 20’s”.  The world we live in today is quite different than the world of our parents or grandparents and there are a number of reasons why getting pregnant at this age is happening more than before.  One reason is that, today, more and more women are focusing on careers or education than in previous generations.  Most couples will succeed in conceiving but other couples may face difficulty making them turn to fertility treatments.  The older you are, the higher your chances of encountering various fertility obstacles, challenges, and delays. In other words, our fertility declines as we age.

Couples with any age have only a 20% chance of achieving a pregnancy each menstrual cycle.  Active fertility charting and ovulation testing, however, will increase those odds substantially.  A woman who is trying to conceive in her 30’s have a chance of less than 15% to conceive.  The monthly odds of conceiving decrease as a woman age due to various physiological issues such as hormonal balance.  This means it is much harder to get a positive result that you are pregnant if you are in your 30’s.  To increase your odds in becoming pregnant, you should stay fit and stay healthy.  Predicting your ovulation is also important as well as charting fertility.  By knowing your ovulatory cycles, you will your days when to make love and increase your chances of conceiving.

As we age, the balance of hormones also decline and with this, our fertility also declines.  The balance between reproductive hormones is crucial for regular ovulation.  A woman’s egg and hormones do not flow with the same balance and stability when she is in her 30’s.  The quality of these eggs as well as the capacity to stimulate maturation also is affected.  Because of this, menstrual cycles are difficult to predict and sometimes, ovulation does not also take place.  The presence of cervical mucus also plays a vital role in fertility.  As we age, cervical mucus also declines.  This may be related to hormonal imbalances as well.  Tests such as follicle stimulating tests can be used at home to assess whether you have reproductive hormone imbalance as well as the condition of your ovaries in producing eggs.

To optimize your chance of being pregnant at the age of 35, the first thing you should do is to have a healthy mental well being.  To do this, calibrate your expectations and realize that you may or you may not get pregnant.  Note that even for someone that is in their 20’s, the chance of getting pregnant is only 20%.  Simply realize that you may not get pregnant in just one night.  Reducing stress or anxiety is the second step for boosting your pregnancy chances. The less you worry, the better your mind and body work together.

Along with healthy well-being, a healthy physical well-being is also important.  Maintaining the proper weight is crucial as being overweight or underweight can adversely affect hormonal balance and cycle regularity.  Eat a healthy diet as well as exercises like yoga can help you.  Taking prenatal vitamins also contribute to the success of you having a conception.

You should also chart your basal body temperatures.  Knowing when you are ovulating will give you a widened opportunity of getting pregnant.  If you know when you ovulate and can time intercourse for your most fertile days, your chances will increase.  However at age 35, guessing your ovulation period is not sufficient, that is why starting an ovulation calendar is important.  If you have some cycle irregularities, herbal fertility remedies such as red clover and raspberry leaves can help.

The best thing to do if your 35 years old or older is to arrange a preconception visit.  It is best that you discuss your medical history, health status, and medications that you are taking with your doctor.  You can clarify your doctor about conceiving tips as well as expectations and they will point you in the right direction.  Your doctor will likely see if you have any interfering fertility issues as well.

You’re Diet to Pregnancy

Eating can affect your ability to get pregnant.  What you eat as well as how much you eat can have positive effects as well as negative effects.  There are food related ways that can help boost your chance in getting pregnant and bear a healthy baby.

Improving your diet three months to a year before you conceive can help you get pregnant.  You may choose to shed some weight or gain if you are planning to get pregnant, and planning your diet and improving on it will help you achieve your goal. Following the recommended weight when conceiving is essential as your weight can reduce your chances of conceiving.  According to studies, overweight woman as well as underweight’s tends to have a decrease chance of conceiving while women who have a body mass index or BMI or 25 to 20 have higher chances.

Healthy eating means eating a balanced diet and avoiding foods high in fat and sugar, such as cakes, biscuits, and ice creams.  These foods make your blood sugar high which can hamper ovulation.  Aiming for at least five portions of fruits of vegetables, whether it is fresh, frozen or juiced is recommended.  Carbohydrate foods such as bread, pasta, rice and potatoes also are good.  Instead of eating red meat, eating lean meat, chicken, fish, eggs, and beans is more appropriate.  Having portions of dairy foods such as milk, cheese and yogurt, which contain calcium is also advised.  Building up of iron in preparation for pregnancy is also important.  That is why eating foods rich in iron like pulses, dried fruit, bread, and green vegetables is recommended.

While you can meet almost all your nutritional needs through a balanced diet, an extra help would also do.  Many doctors will suggest taking a supplement while trying to conceive.  These supplements do you good as they help you make sure that you are supplied everything your body needs.  Keep in mind however, that a supplement is not a substitute for a sound diet.

The intake of folic acid is definitely a yes if you are planning to get pregnant.  This B vitamin has been linked to a lower incidence of heart attacks, strokes, cancer, and diabetes. It also reduces the risk of a baby having neural tube birth defects such as spina bifida   Women who are trying to conceive should take a supplement of 0.4 milligrams (mg) daily.  Folic acid should be taken from time to time especially when you stop taking contraceptive pills.
In addition, it’s wise to eat folate-rich foods such as dark green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, nuts, whole grains, brown rice, as well as fortified breads and cereals.

Making adjustments or better yet cutting your alcohol intake is advised if you want to get pregnant. The main risk here is to a developing fetus which can be harmed by heavy drinking.  If you have stopped using contraception, there is a chance that you could already be pregnant – it’s better to be safe than sorry and avoid worrying later about how much drinking alcohol early in pregnancy could cause harm to your baby.

Another substance to cut is caffeine.  There is no consistent evidence to link caffeinated beverages to fertility problems. However, it has been linked to miscarriage and low birth weight.

There are also other things to avoid.  Too much vitamin A could harm your baby that is why you should limit yourself with this.  When eating fish, be sure that it contains no mercury or at least has minimal amounts of mercury.  High levels of mercury can harm an unborn baby’s developing nervous system.

Consulting a general practitioner is advised as they may also give you the do’s and don’ts in order to have that pregnancy.  They are the ones who have more knowledge and the people who really know what is good and what is not.  Keeping your appointments with them is important and you should also follow their instructions with regards to food restrictions and many more.

Conceiving after a Miscarriage

There are a lot of questions and fears that have to be addressed before most women feel that they are ready to attempt to conceive after miscarriage. Some women want to attempt to conceive after miscarriage right away while others want nothing to do with conceiving after miscarriage.

Conceiving after miscarriage creates different feelings for each woman as well as differences among women. For most women, a miscarriage is a one-time event. Conceiving after miscarriage is no more difficult than it was the first time. There’s nothing special you have to do. Even if you had a miscarriage, having a normal pregnancy is very likely to happen. If your miscarriage was due to a medical condition, your odds of conceiving again may be different.

The first thing you should do is to visit a medical practitioner. A doctor can help you identify if you have any physical limitation or a medical problem that hinders you of having another pregnancy. If there are no concerns, when to try again becomes your personal choice. Many doctors advise that you wait for at least a cycle or two after a miscarriage before trying to conceive again. This is done in order to have time to deal with any underlying emotional distresses and solves them.

Mostly, a woman who has suffered from a miscarriage is ready to get pregnant again as soon as her menstrual cycle returns to normal. This usually happens in about four to six weeks, if her cycles were previously regular and if the miscarriage is devoid of complications.

If the miscarriage was complicated especially if it was associated with blood loss, fever and irregular discharges from the vagina, it is advisable to defer pregnancy until it has been ruled out as an underlying cause of the miscarriage.

Determination of ovulation can be done by keeping a chart upon which you will record your daily basal body temperature. Before getting out of bed in the morning, take your temperature and record it and over a month. You will see slight variations as well as marked elevations, more likely 3 degrees Celsius above your normal body temperature, this indicates that you are ovulating. Once you become aware of your ovulation date by taking your temperature, you can be sure that you that your cycles are back in some form of regularity.

Having that your cycles are back to normal, having sex frequently follows. Increase love making will definitely boost your chances. However, enjoy making love and try not to worry f getting pregnant or what as this can be depressing if it will be looked like as a job or a duty. Spend lovemaking as a time to bond and express your feelings as well with your partner.

Trying to conceive again after a miscarriage requires you to become both physically and mentally healthy. Quitting smoking and cutting out alcohol can also improve your odds as well as having the proper diet and maintaining a healthy weight. If you are planning to have another pregnancy, then it is best that you prepare yourself. And being healthy is the best way to do this.
